Friends of Bark EUROPA

Youngsters project

Visiting extraordinary places is only one part of what the EUROPA is about. The other, equally important part is preserving and passing on the trade of seamanship and tall ship sailing.

Mission

Bark EUROPA is one of the few tall ships left that really sails, and is home to some of the most knowledgeable tall ship sailors in the world that master the arts of rigging, sailmaking and tall ship sailing. By bringing young people with an interest in sailing on board we can pass that knowledge on to the younger generation.

Vision

The Friends of Bark EUROPA help to fulfill that mission by offering youngsters, who could benefit greatly from some time away from home, a valuable experience for the rest of their lives. They embark on a long ocean crossing on board EUROPA, fully sponsored by the Friends of Bark EUROPA.

Together with the permanent crew they will learn how to work on a tall ship, discover their talents and enlarge their skillset. They will work with their hands, outside everyday, with only water and wind around in an offline environment. Without any influences of their lives at home, without a phone or computer, they will discover what is important for them and what they need to reach their goals.

Kees Gerritse:
"A long sailing voyage on a ship such as Bark EUROPA is a life-long experience and will change you as a human being. I would like to give young people the opportunity to experience this amazing feeling."

Previous youngster: "Sailing on board Europa was a very nice experience. It thought me a lot. For example, to learn how to control my anger, how to wake up on time, how to be responsible, how to be humble. I learned a lot about sailing that I never did before."

Your next destination?

In 2021 we will be looking again for young adventurers who could use this experience to get to know themselves in a new way, but do not have the financial resources to do it.

Together with our crew, you will join the watch system, you will help with sailing the ship, maintenance on board and with cleaning. You don’t need to have any knowledge of sailing, as you will be trained by our permanent crew. On board you will learn to work together, be flexible, listen, be tough through wind and weather, but also to have lots of fun!

Who are we looking for?

  • Between 18 and 21 years
  • In possession of your own travel and health insurance
  • Not dependent on addictive substances
  • Self-reliant on daily care
  • Healthy and fit to make the ocean crossing of almost two and a half months
  • Able to travel independently to the ship
  • Able to express yourself in English to the rest of the crew and voyage crew

Do you think you are the one we are looking for? Send an email to friend@barkeuropa.com and perhaps you will be sailing the oceans on board EUROPA.
